Just like Aeneas who fled Troy 3 millenia ago, so would the Byzantines flee west to a safer place. A new, Third Odyssey, which would see the Byzantines as a chosen people cross the vast seas and oceans west of Europe to Elysium, the promised lands. At first, he ridiculed Ioannes for it, but the more he heard, the more intrigued he became. The day after he met with his brother, Konstantinos, and shared with him his plan. At least dying at sea meant not dying in a fallen Constantinople. A ridiculous plan for sure, but in a desperate situation like his, what else could he do? It was definitely worth a shot. Whilst he was going over the sketches and drawings, a plan was forming in his head.
These were fascinating designs, visionary for their time. It contained schematics of dromons retrofitted with the deep-sea capabilities of the Ancient Roman vessels that plied the treacherous seas between the coasts of what we nowadays call Spain and France. Ioannes found a cache of documents which once belonged to former Basileus Alexios Komnenos.
It was there that he made a discovery that would change the fate of his Empire and the world at large, forever. In a melancholic mood, he retreated to the cellars of the Imperial Palace to contemplate and read some ancient books on the history of his once mighty Empire. The end of an Empire that has been on this blessed earth for over a millennium. For he knew that the failure at Varna would spell the doom of his fragile Empire. When the news arrived at Constantinople the day after, Basileus Ioannes felt heartbroken. Just the day prior, the Battle of Varna had seen the Ottoman Sultan Murad II defeat the Hungarian-Polish troops in their ill-fated Crusade against the Ottomans.

A lot of things changed in the base game and the same is true for the mod. However I had other AARs and in the end I never got round to it, but the idea kept persisting in my head for over 5 years now.Īfter a long hiatus with the game itself (I kinda fell out of the loop of the game after Dharma released), I recently got back to the game and discovered that the mod had been updated after almost a year of no updates, bringing the mod up to date with the current version of the game. I did one run with the mod back then all the way to 1821 and ever since, I wanted to tell the story of that run I did.

It is an absolutely amazing mod, full of events and flavour, which I fell in love with some years ago. This AAR will follow the events of The Byzantine Empire fleeing from their arch-nemesis the Ottomans to the New World, which is the basis for the mod used for this AAR: Third Odyssey: Back to the Motherland. The idea for this AAR however is almost 5 years old by now. I had to look the number up cause it's been some years since I wrote an AAR here, I've become rusty. Hello and welcome to my 4th AAR for Europa Universalis IV.
